Zooko Wilcox es un estadounidense nacido en Arizona, ciberpunk y experto en seguridad informática. En 2016 fundó Zcash (ZEC), la criptomoneda destinada a utilizar la criptografía para proporcionar un método más avanzado de privacidad a sus usuarios, en comparación con otras criptomonedas como bitcoin o litecoin.

Cripto247: Estamos aquí con Zooko Wilcox, CEO de Zcash, “la criptomoneda de la privacidad”: ¿Qué significa eso?

La mayoría de las criptomonedas, si las usas, exponen lo que estás haciendo a todos los que pueden acceder a la blockchain. Entonces, para una blockchain pública como Bitcoin o Ethereum significa a cualquier persona en el mundo.

Y con Zcash utilizamos el cifrado en la parte superior de la cadena de bloques, de modo que solo lo puedan ver las personas que deberían… Si realizás una transacción, deberían poder verla las personas a las que enviás el dinero, incluso podrías revelarlo a alguien más. Como si desearas un comprobante de pago para demostrar que compraste algo, podés mostrárselo a otra persona. Pero la parte no autorizada no debería estar viéndolo.

Cripto247: Entonces, ¿cuál es el valor en eso?

Bueno, protege a los usuarios de ser espiados, de ser atacados por ladrones, lo cual es un gran problema en las criptomonedas en este momento. Y la misma analogía ocurrió con Bitcoin. Cuando Bitcoin era nuevo tenía estas cadenas aleatorias de direcciones que parecían arbitrarias. Y así, durante un tiempo, la gente pensó que, dado que su nombre no está en la dirección, entonces, cuando usa Bitcoin, tiene privacidad. Eso es totalmente falso. Cuando utilizás bitcoin, la gente, mucha gente, no solo tu gobierno, sino también otros gobiernos, como el gobierno de Corea del Norte, estaban detrás de muchas de esas operaciones de robo de bitcoin. Todas estas otras personas pueden ver lo que estás haciendo. Y necesitás herramientas más mejoradas para protegerte.

Y en Internet, agregamos esa herramienta mejorada, que es HTTPS, que es la versión de Internet que no expone su información a hackers informáticos arbitrarios. Y Zcash es el equivalente de eso para la criptomoneda.

Cripto247: ¿Cómo va tu integración con Ethereum?

Uhm, aún no hemos logrado tener una integración entre Bitcoin y Ethereum donde pueda usar ambos al mismo tiempo y transferirlos entre ellos o algo así. Hemos intentado algunos experimentos tecnológicos diferentes para lograrlo, y hemos compartido un lugar y otro donde los desarrolladores de Ethereum y los desarrolladores de Zcash comparten buenas ideas y se ayudan mutuamente para mejorar ambos proyectos. Pero creo que probablemente nos estemos acercando a descubrir cómo hacer que se unan entre sí, tal vez el próximo año [por 2019].

Cripto247:  ¿Creés que Vitalik y vos podrán trabajar juntos?

Ah, sí, trabajamos juntos no muy a menudo en este momento, solo porque ayudamos a otros con, ya sabes, ideas científicas.

Cripto247:  Ok, entonces, ¿qué viene en 2019 para Zcash?

Veamos… Hay un montón de mejoras de ingeniería dirigidas a desplegar Zcash en más y más lugares, haciendo que todos usen las direcciones protegidas (shield addreses) que son, que son el buen tipo de direcciones, en lugar de usar las direcciones transparentes que solo están allí para la compatibilidad con versiones anteriores. Buscamos también la mejora de la experiencia del usuario, porque (y esto aplica para todas las criptomonedas) si encontrás a alguien que nunca usó una criptomoneda o ni siquiera sabía lo qué era y le decís: “tomá esto y comprá algo en Amazon con él”, esto será una experiencia terrible para esa persona. Es desconcertante, da miedo, y podrían resetear accidentalmente su teléfono, borrar sus llaves y perder todo su dinero… No funciona, es una experiencia muy mala para el usuario.

Entonces, en lo que nos estamos enfocando en Zcash es implementarlo en todas partes, hacer que todos actualicen sus direcciones a aquellas direcciones mejoradas y, al mismo tiempo, mejorar la experiencia del usuario para que los usuarios normales puedan encontrarlo comprensible, seguro, cómodo, fácil, etc.

Cripto247: Perfecto. Por lo tanto, la última pregunta es personal. Seguís una dieta muy estricta, ¿no?

Ja ja ja, la mayor parte del tiempo. El 95% de las veces estoy en una dieta muy estricta, y luego de vez en cuando me encuentro boca abajo en un helado, por lo que echo por tierra la idea.

Ok, ok, pero ¿qué aspecto tiene, un día normal en sus hábitos alimenticios?

Oh, una buena dieta saludable es comer nada más que carne. No debes comer verduras, frutas, granos, soja, no sé, todas esas cosas. No debes comer nada de eso, eso es malo para tu salud. Lo que es bueno para tu salud es comer trozos de animales muertos y huevos.

So, we are here with Zooko Wilcox, CEO at Zcash. The cryptocurrency about privacy. So, what does that mean?

It’s that, most cryptocurrencies if you use them it exposes what you are doing to everyone who can touch the blockchain.

So, for a public blockchain like Bitcoin or Ethereum that means everyone in the world.

And with Zcash we use encryption on top of the blockchain, so that only the people who should be able to see it, like… if you make a transaction you should see it, the people you are sending the money to, they should see it, you might even want to reveal it to someone else. Like if you want a proof of payment to prove that you bought something, you can show it to someone else.

But unauthorized party shouldn’t be seeing it.

So what’s the value in that?

Well, it protects users from being spied on, from being targeted by thieves, which is a huge problem in cryptocurrencies right now. And it makes it compatible with business requirements, businesses that deal in financial transactions, it’s against their rules, and it’s usually against their national laws for them to leak information about their financial transactions to unauthorized parties.

So, you gave a great comparison before about the IP addresses that we used to think that were gonna protect us, but they didn’t. How does that work?

Uh, the analogy? So the analogy is, when the internet was brand new and people didn’t understand it very well yet, they thought it was private and anonymous because when you got an internet service and you hooked up a computer to the internet, you got a four number IP address and since it didn’t have your name in it people thought that meant you had privacy when you use the internet. But we found out you totally don’t have privacy when you use the internet, unless you use much more better technology or tools to protect yourself.

And the same analogy happened with Bitcoin. When Bitcoin was new it had this arbitrary looking random strings for addresses. And so, for a while people thought that since your name is not in the address, then whenever you use Bitcoin you have privacy, that’s totally false. When you use Bitcoin, people, lots of people, not just your government, but like other governments, like the government of North korea whos behind many of those Bitcoin stealing operations. All these other people are able to see what you are doing. And you need much more improved tools to protect yourself.

And on the internet we added that improved tool, which is HTTPS, which is the version of the world wide web that doesn’t expose your information to arbitrary hackers. And Zcash is the equivalent of that for cryptocurrency.

How’s your integration with Ethereum going?

Uhm, we have not yet succeeded in having integration between bitcoin and ethereum where you can use both at the same time and transfer back and forth between them or anything like that. We have tried a few different technological experiments to achieve that, and we’ve shared back and forth where the ethereum developers and the zcash developers help each other out and give good ideas and help each other improve both of the projects. But I think we are probably getting close to figuring out how to make them link together, maybe next year.

You think you and Vitalik are gonna be able to work together side by side?

Oh yeah, we worked together not very frequently right now, just because we help other out with, you know, science ideas.

Ok, so what’s next year coming for zcash?

Lets see… there’s a whole bunch of engineering improvements aimed at getting zcash deployed to more and more places, getting everyone to use the shielded addresses which are the, like, the good kind of protected privacy instead of using the transparent addresses which are only there for backwards compatibility, and improving the user experience, because for all cryptocurrencies if you find someone who never used a cryptocurrency or didn’t even know what it was and you ask them like, take this and go buy something from Amazon with it.

This is going to be a terrible experience for them, it’s baffling, it’s scary, they might accidentally reset their phone and delete their keys and lose all their money, it doesn’t work, its very very bad user experience.

And so, what we are focusing on at zcash is deploying it everywhere, getting everyone to upgrade to the improved addresses, and improving the user experience so that normal old users can find it understandable, safe, comfortable, easy, etcetera.

Perfect. So, last question for your personal funds. You follow a very strict diet, don’t you?

Ha ha ha, most of the time. 95% of the time i’m on a very strict diet, and then every now and then I wake up face down in the ice cream, so that blows the whole idea.

Ok ok, but what does it look like, a normal day in your eating habits?

Oh, a good healthy diet is eating nothing but meat. You shouldn’t eat vegetables, fruits, grains, soy, i don’t know, all that stuff. You shouldn’t eat any of that, thats bad for your health. What’s good for your health is to eat pieces of dead animal and eggs.
